Blueprints for Leadership · a book series by Scott Buley

Before asking people to work harder, examine the blueprint.

Great leadership can't make up for a poorly designed organisation. Blueprints for Leadership looks beneath the surface of management at how organisations really work: how accountability is set, how authority is shared, and whether the right people are in the right roles.

Each chapter hands you one visual blueprint to print large, lay on the table and draw on together.

The method

Doodle, Discover, Do.

Most books ask you to read first and apply later, if at all. These run the other way. Every chapter follows the same three steps, so once you've done one blueprint you can run any of them.

1

Doodle

Open the blueprint, on paper or on screen, and write all over it. Pencils, not pens. You'll change your mind, and you should.

2

Discover

Step back and find what the page is telling you. Analyse it, talk it out, and reach a shared read with the people in the room.

3

Do

Turn one insight into a decision with a name and a date on it.

The Doodle, Discover, Do Method for Business

Drawing on leadership experience across many industries, Scott Buley challenges conventional management thinking and offers practical frameworks for building organisations that are clearer, stronger and better equipped to perform. Nine blueprints, each for a different problem, and a tenth that pieces them together.

  1. Vantage PointFrom the balcony and beyond: several points of view on one page, including the view of yourself.
  2. Who's Who in the TribeRoles and responsibilities: one tribe, seven character classes, and your place in it.
  3. How Things Are DoneFrom climate to culture: what you see from the street isn't what you find inside.
  4. From Outliers to Silent MajorityWorkforce planning: see the spread of performance and match a tactic to each group.
  5. A Visual DebriefFrom past performance to future success: draw someone's work as they talk.
  6. Spinning PlatesKeeping priorities moving: what to keep in the air, what to shelve, what to let fall.
  7. Times of HappinessThe career journey: plot your ages and stages, then read the shape.
  8. The Performance JourneyMoving through change and resistance, and counting the cost nobody counts.
  9. Mapping the MachineFrom input to output to outcomes, and the gap between the drawing and reality.
  10. World BuildingPiecing the blueprints together. The insight is in the space between two of them.

The Doodle, Discover, Do Method for Creative Business

Most of what we call a people problem is really a design problem wearing a person's face.

Volume 1 was written from the outside looking in. This one was written from the inside. Scott spent six years as Head of People and Culture at an Australian visual effects company. In that time it grew several times over, ran many films and series at once, was acquired into a global network, and had to hold on to its reason for existing. Structure explained its problems better than personality did.

Written for leaders in creative and project-based businesses, and for the HR, people and organisation design professionals who work alongside them. Grounded in Elliott Jaques's work on levels of work.

  1. Load-BearingLevels of work, and the weight people can carry.
  2. The KitThe pieces a team actually needs, and how they connect.
  3. MispricedPaying for what wins, not for what the market admires.
  4. The HandleAccountability with the power to act on it.
  5. The ThreadStructure travels as story.
  6. The InstrumentPresence is wanting something from the room.
  7. The Travelling ShowThe organisation the show hangs on.
  8. The CathedralSuccession and institutional memory.
  9. The HarbourThe organisation and the world it serves.
  10. World BuildingPiecing the blueprints together.
